As the festive season is already here, many of us are expecting guests for an overnight stay. As the pandemic has put a strict restriction to go out and party, house parties are the only cure for our festive spirit. So, if your friends or relatives are coming to your home, as a gracious host you must prepare well to make them feel comfortable. Smita and Ankush Chatterjee, a newly married couple recently moved into a spacious 3BHK luxury apartment on B.T. Road, Kolkata where they dedicated one room only for entertaining guests. “We have created a warm and inviting space for our guests keeping things very simple so that they can be comfortable. It just shows that we care and are happy to have them. If your guests feel unsettling and uncomfortable at your home, it’s not desirable”, said Ankush.

Here are a few tips to create a relaxing environment with a little creativity and your guest will remember you as a pro-host!

  1. Create a relaxing environment:

The first rule of decorating your guest room is to never make it cramped with too many furniture. A busy theme in the guest room might make them feel unsettling. The boundaries between bedroom and storage space should not be blurred. Create a relaxing atmosphere by painting the room with soft blues and greens. You can splash some bright-hued wallpaper or graphic piece of art to balance the look. Place an elegant chandelier above the bed to complete the look.

  1. Arrange comfortable bedding:

A comfortable bed is something you should not ever compromise with. Invest in good quality, comfortable mattress that will ensure restful sleep. Provide clean, crisp and unstained bed sheets along with multiple pillows that are comfy and plump. Opt for natural fabrics that are breathable, soft-to-touch and easily washable. Keep extra lightweight cotton blankets folded up at the end of the bed for guests. Choose soft neutral colours for the linens as they make a space look fresh and welcoming. A bedside table can be a great addition to keep a jug of water handy in case they need at the midnight.

  1. Provide an empty closet:

Guests generally arrive with luggage. There must be a luggage rack or a small table or bench to put down bags or suitcases so that they don’t have to stoop over to the floor to pull out a clean pair of socks. Clean the closet before the arrival of your guests so that they can easily unpack their belongings and store them in their own way into an empty space. Also, invest in some over-the-door hook that can accommodate some hanging clothes, hangers, hook on the wall or behind a closet door can hold a robe, coat, or purse. Make some drawer space for guests to unload frequently used items like toiletries or jewellery.

  1. Don’t forget bathroom essentials:

A clumsy, dirty bathroom is the biggest turn-off when somebody arrives at your home. Thoroughly clean the guest room before their arrival and throw away things that are of no use. Place fresh towels neatly folded in a place where the guests can see them. Leave a thoughtful collection of toiletries that might include shampoo, conditioner, soap, moisturiser, toothpaste, toothbrush etc. Put them in a basket of toiletries and keep it somewhere visible to the guest. Place some clean hand towels and washcloths to make your guests feel content after a refreshing bath. Some added fragrance in the bathroom will be a bonus.

  1. Include desks & chairs:

Provide a comfortable place to sit and read or write something by including an upholstered armchair or side chair in the room with a table and lamp close by. A simple writing desk with a chair can be a saviour if your guests need a temporary workspace. Set up a small coffee table to place keys and other necessary accessories that are used frequently.

The idea is to provide your guests with all the conveniences of home so that they feel comfortable. You can display a floral arrangement with seasonal flowers that will not only look good but fill the room with a refreshing fragrance. Keep a curated collection of your favourite books and recent magazines that will reflect your taste. Put up the WiFi access notifications in a prominent place so that they can access it on all their electronics, without asking for it.
