Orchid family is one of the largest families of flowering plants in all across the world, including about 28000 currently accepted species, distributed in about 763 genera. In China, near about 1300 orchid species have been recorded and most of the species are found in South and Southwest China. Being one of the most orchid diversity provinces in China, Sichuan has more than 440 orchid species, and among them, slipper orchids are very popular in the country. As they share some unique characteristics, or “apomorphies”, you can easily differentiate orchids from other plants. Some among these are bilateral symmetry of the flower (zygomorphism), fused stamens and carpels, a nearly always highly modified petal (labellum), many resupinate flowers, and extremely small seeds. Though these flowers are widely spared in the world, they are becoming more and more endangered nowadays, and the credit goes to habitat damage and over the collection.
Belong to heath family; Rhododendron is a genus of woody plants that are evergreen and deciduous. They are shrubs or trees; the smallest species is only a few centimeters high while the tallest one can grow up to 20 meters. There are about 960 species of Rhododendron in all across the world and 560 species of them are found in China, and more than 200 species are in Sichuan. So, China is the kingdom of this endemic flower. The showy flowers come in red, yellow, pink, and white colors. Every year, from April to June, this flower bloom in mountains with altitude rising.
Lily, also familiar as lilium, is a genus of lily family is a bright and colorful flower. There are 80 kinds of lilies all across the world and 39 species of them are found in China, mainly in the Southwest part. The most popular one is Lilium regale. They are perennial herbaceous plants and have yellow, white, purple, pink, red, or green flowers, often with spotted on petals, and bloom in early summer. Wilson collected it to Europe, and later it has been developed into many new varieties.
A genus of flowering plants in the family Papaveraceae that are generally familiar as “blue poppy”, Meconopsis contains about 50 species and most of them are found in Himalayas and Hengduan mountains. China has almost 38 species and most of them are found in Tibet, Yunnan, and Sichuan. Their flowers are blue, yellow, red, purple, and even white. Though they are related to poppy, they don’t produce opium. The flower is so beautiful that they are loved and purchased by people all over the world.
